For the last three years, Rhizome and Chronus Art Center (Shanghai) have partnered to present the Prix Net Art, a cash prize that goes to artists who are committed to working online and who represent important directions in contemporary net art practice. In the past, two artists have been awarded, but this year, after much deliberation, the jury—comprising Zhang Ga, Artistic Director of Chronus Art Center, Distinguished Professor at China Central Academy of Fine Arts; Lauren Cornell, Associate Director of Technology Initiatives and Curator at the New Museum; Christiane Paul, Associate Professor in the School of Media Studies at the New School and Adjunct Curator of New Media Arts at the Whitney Museum of American Art; and Aria Dean, assistant curator of net art and digital culture at Rhizome—elected to recognize three recipients, each of whom will receive $5,000.

After considering a rich field of candidates nominated by the general public and invited expert nominators, the jury selected two artists and an artist duo who represent differently formulated but intersecting concerns and directions in the field of net art. Read more »

"Mez does for code poetry as jodi and Vuk Cosic have done for ASCII Art: Turning a great, but naively executed concept into something brilliant, paving the ground for a whole generation of digital artists." (Florian Cramer). The impact of her unique code/net.wurks [constructed via her pioneering net.language "mezangelle"] has been equated with the work of Shakespeare, James Joyce, Emily Dickinson, and Larry Wall. Mez has exhibited extensively since the early 90s.

Video editing with open source tools

Video editing is the process of cutting and pasting video sequences, in order to create a fluid, often narrative, combination of images and sound that develops in time following a certain structure or story board. While analogue video editing requires both a substantial investment in equipment and an aesthetic project, for example a detailed edit list and a well structured script, digital video editing on the other hand has become much more accessible. It is an easy and experimental way to create combinations of any type of footage. Huge databases of video images are readily available and the costs for setting up a home made video editing station are progressively decreasing. Software applications are more reliable, stable and easy to find, machines are faster, video cameras cheaper and hard drives larger. Digital video editing, a non-linear or non destructive method (in comparison to the physical cutting of the negative in film), can also be viewed as the audio/video equivalent of word-processing.

Doors open: 13.30

Live webcast:

The digital revolution has profound effects on the status of art criticism. At the same time the presence of art criticism on the internet is mostly limited to the “blog” – a format that celebrates an impressionistic, subjective and often populistic point of view. More substantial forms of web-based criticism are still rare to be found. Read more »
