SOD

Schermafbeelding 2012-02-12 om 18.58.02.png

Launch SOD

JoDi's SOD is a modification of the game Wolfenstein. You can actually attempt to play the game, but everything is scrampled. SOD is a modification or "hack" of id Software’s action game Wolfenstein 3D. The goal is to escape from a Nazi dungeon.

The game is a space that is loosely architectural and extremely disorienting. It is easy to get lost, and it can be difficult to distinguish the walls from the targets one is supposed to shoot. JODI complements the game-play difficulties with a cryptic interface (setting game preferences is no easy task!) and tongue-in-cheek game instructions along the lines of "If you are tough, press N. If not, press Y daintily."

Tulse Luper Journey

tulseluper.png

Launch project

Investigate the 20th century through Tulse Lupers life. Tulse Luper is the lead character in an ambitious series of projects initiated by film director Peter Greenaway.
So far, the project includes three feature films, a series of DVD's, travelling exhibitions, books, publications and this online game produced by Submarine.
These are all part of a growing universe of stories, facts, fiction, history and drama based on the adventures of a man who spent most of his live as a prisoner - mistaken for someone important, a spy, a lover, an artist, a writer and an observer.

Set against the background of 20th century history, Tulses journey through life reads as a personal, subjective history of events and developments that shaped the world as we know it.

Greenaways statement that "cinema is dead" calls for new ways of communicating ideas. This game is part of the search for a crossover format that breaks the boundaries and rules that have been imposed by film, theatre, books, games and other traditional media.

Created by developers, artists and students from around Europe, The Tulse Luper Journey explores new boundaries of online interactive media. Read more »

Pong

pong.png

Launch project

Browser Pong is a traditional Pong game played not in a browser window, but with browser windows.
The typical browsing experience is conducted through a single application window. This is indeed a useful, practical thing. Browser Pong instead exists between a collection of windows. During play the negative space between windows is transformed into a playing field?the abstracted tennis court of Pong. The idea of thinking inside or outside some "box" is of course a dead and beaten horse. Browser Pong attempts to think with the boxes. The audio content was created by sound artist and musician Dominic Matar of Nine Cats Music specifically for this piece.

Variable media questionnaire, 3rd generation beta: A Forging the Future project

forging_logo_transparent_thu.png

Works of creative expression don't lend themselves to a one-size-fits-all preservation solution. Yet the number and complexity of preservation options can confuse even the most informed conservator or archivist.

The Variable Media Questionnaire can help by recording opinions on how to preserve creative works when their current medium becomes obsolete.

The Variable Media Questionnaire is a project of Forging the Future, an alliance dedicated to building tools to help rescue digital culture from oblivion.

CODE DRIFT

Preface
===========
Code Drift

~Arthur & Marilouise Kroker~

What is the fate of the regime of computation? A global techno-culture inscribed by the terrorism of the code or an emergent age of networked individualism driven onwards by the ecstatic visions of augmented reality, mobility, and connectivity?

When the regime of computation suddenly slams into the real world of globalization, when code is forced to tangle with the always messy world of blown away referential values -- the real world of gender trouble, stormy challenges to the big signifiers of race, class and ethnicity -- we finally know that we are living in the beginning days of something radically new, namely a culture of code drift. Arse Elektronica

Arse Electronica

Sexuality, Genetics, Biotech, Wetware, Body mods.

Scottish SF author Iain Banks created a fictitious group-civilisation called "Culture" in his eponymous narrative. The vast majority of humanoid people in the "Culture" are born with greatly altered glands housed within their central nervous systems, who secrete - on command - mood- and sensory-appreciation-altering compounds into the person's bloodstream. Additionally many inhabitants have subtly altered reproductive organs - and control over the associated nerves - to enhance sexual pleasure. Ovulation is at will in the female, and a fetus up to a certain stage may be re-absorbed, aborted, or held at a static point in its development; again, as willed. Also, a viral change from one sex into the other, is possible. And there is a convention that each person should give birth to one child in their lives. It may sound strange, but Banks states that a society in which it is so easy to change sex will rapidly find out if it is treating one gender better than the other. Pressure for change within society would presumably build up until some form of sexual equality and hence numerical parity will be established.
Does this set-up sound too futuristic? Too utopian? Too bizarre?
