JURY STATEMENT
For the last three years, Rhizome and Chronus Art Center (Shanghai) have partnered to present the Prix Net Art, a cash prize that goes to artists who are committed to working online and who represent important directions in contemporary net art practice. In the past, two artists have been awarded, but this year, after much deliberation, the jury—comprising Zhang Ga, Artistic Director of Chronus Art Center, Distinguished Professor at China Central Academy of Fine Arts; Lauren Cornell, Associate Director of Technology Initiatives and Curator at the New Museum; Christiane Paul, Associate Professor in the School of Media Studies at the New School and Adjunct Curator of New Media Arts at the Whitney Museum of American Art; and Aria Dean, assistant curator of net art and digital culture at Rhizome—elected to recognize three recipients, each of whom will receive $5,000.

After considering a rich field of candidates nominated by the general public and invited expert nominators, the jury selected two artists and an artist duo who represent differently formulated but intersecting concerns and directions in the field of net art. Read more »

net-art classic: The Simulator

Launch The Simulator [1997]

HTML-based work of a banal 'interactive' day. Building The Simulator is an attempt at accenting and exploring the edge between the simulacrum of the internet and banal physical existence. By reverting physicalness into digital space, one is alerted discrepancies between physical and digital existence. Physical concepts of linear time and space - when re-created in digital format - seem odd or humorous. Writing, working, and physically relaxing do not translate literally into a digital realm. The attempt to do so, however, makes the parallax between the two noticeable.

letters demand things

poemstogo.PNG

having obtained identities long ago, they now demand to be typed, spoken, traced, heard, and related to in specific ways. and yet, for all their demands, they only exist as reflections of human handwriting and visual echoes of muscles and air working in concert to give them life as sound waves.

these two pieces examine some of these relationships and how we affect them as we become a part of the process. as in life, the experience of them will be unique each time they are opened, so if you are dissatisfied with a given configuration, feel free to destroy the window and try again.
