JURY STATEMENT
For the last three years, Rhizome and Chronus Art Center (Shanghai) have partnered to present the Prix Net Art, a cash prize that goes to artists who are committed to working online and who represent important directions in contemporary net art practice. In the past, two artists have been awarded, but this year, after much deliberation, the jury—comprising Zhang Ga, Artistic Director of Chronus Art Center, Distinguished Professor at China Central Academy of Fine Arts; Lauren Cornell, Associate Director of Technology Initiatives and Curator at the New Museum; Christiane Paul, Associate Professor in the School of Media Studies at the New School and Adjunct Curator of New Media Arts at the Whitney Museum of American Art; and Aria Dean, assistant curator of net art and digital culture at Rhizome—elected to recognize three recipients, each of whom will receive $5,000.

After considering a rich field of candidates nominated by the general public and invited expert nominators, the jury selected two artists and an artist duo who represent differently formulated but intersecting concerns and directions in the field of net art. Read more »

"More-Inc. is an artistic simulation of lifestyle in a capitalist culture. The project is dedicated to employee number 12995 and to his frustrations and angst. Meyer analyses, with irony, the human being's role in a world dominated by corporations and the New Economy. The user is invited to participate in the daily routine of a faceless employee and to interact with the endless meetings, paper pushing, form filing, homogeneity, subversion, and anxiety that are typical in the corporate work world. Later, the user's interaction travels beyond the job to employee 12995's domestic life and dreamy subconscious leading to an experiential crescendo realized in breakdown, dissimulation, and resurrection." Pianographique

Launch Pianographique

Mix visuals with sound and create your own multimedia masterpiece. Pianographique transforms your computer into a fully funktified groove machine. It works by assigning a sample and a visual to each letter on your keyboard.

You can choose between nine pianos styles (rap, jazz, techno, classic, ·). Create your music while simultaneously conducting the play of a visual graphic maelstrom· Have fun. The graphic Piano is a multimedia instrument created in 1993 on CD-Rom and also available on the Net.

Each letter on the keyboard sets off a sound and an animation underneath the mouse cursor.

By typing on the keyboard, pictures and sounds mix together. In this audiovisual collage, all the key combinations are possible. The work is composed and recomposed until the user arrives at his final flourish... The spacebar deletes the composition.

Websites in the catalog are categorized as either surf clubs, art clubs, or related sites. The term surf club originated from the Nasty Nets group blog tagline "Internet Surfing Club," and is often used to describe group artist blogs where the prevailing subject is internet culture and aesthetics and where lines are blurred between the roles of artist, curator, and archivist.
